This partnership will enable competitive local exchange carrier's (CLECs) to deploy voice-enabled DSL services to residential customers. Today's deployment of DSL has been primarily driven by the need for high-speed Internet access, however additional services, such as voice, will soon be activated. 2Wire has developed an award winning product in the residential gateway category known as the HomePortal. It combines a DSL broadband modem with several in-home networking architectures such as Ethernet, HomePNA, and USB to manage an integrated data, voice and entertainment network. The HomePortal was designed to support multiple high-speed DSL services that will be sold directly to consumers for use throughout the home. Providing voice support that leverages the always-on DSL pipeline is a key element of the HomePortal and presents an opportunity for CLECs to sell additional services to consumers.
