TOLLBRIDGE TECHNOLOGIES DEMONSTRATES VOICE OVER CABLE AT CABLE 2000 SHOW
Tollbridge Voice-over-Cable Solution Allows MSOs to Deploy Today Leveraging DOCSIS Cable Modem Networks, PacketCable-based MTAs, and Class 5 Switches

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 8, 2000 - TollBridge Technologies, the leading developer of high-quality voice-over-broadband solutions for the new generation of carriers, will demonstrate its voice-over-cable solution at the Cable 2000 Show in New Orleans, May 7-10. Voice-over-Cable represents the next major evolution in TollBridge's Voice over Broadband strategy. The TollBridge TB200 Voice Gateway will be the centerpiece of a voice-over-packet cable demonstration on a Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) network, showcasing the advantages of its superior voice quality and services for cable. The TB200 Voice Gateway is being widely deployed for Voice-over-DSL applications today.

"IP-based voice-over-cable solutions enable cable Multiple System Operators (MSOs) to use their DOCSIS high-speed data networks to offer telephony services," said Agnes Imregh, vice president of marketing at TollBridge Technologies. "IP telephony allows them to avoid the capital, operational, and spectrum inefficiencies inherent with maintaining a separate voice network. By migrating to IP telephony, cable operators can create an integrated multi-service communications system that optimizes bandwidth efficiency and reduces per-subscriber capital and operating costs."

The TollBridge solution takes advantage of all of the CLASS and custom calling services that are delivered by a Class 5 switch, which is important, since customers expect to get the same services that they currently receive from the incumbent carrier. It also enables MSOs to provide efficient, bundled voice, data, and video service packages that reduce customer churn. By leveraging the existing broadband, switching, and data infrastructure, MSOs can deploy cost-effective IP telephony services today, increasing their time to market, and maximizing market share.

Visitors to the TollBridge booth will be able to initiate and receive phone calls on the TollBridge platform over a DOCSIS cable data modem network to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) via a GR-303 interface. A TollBridge TB50 Integrated Access Device (IAD) and a Broadcom Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA) will packetize the calls for transport over the DOCSIS network to the TollBridge TB200. The TB200 will enable calls to be placed to the outside world or to another line on the cable or a DSL network being demonstrated at the show.

"The TollBridge solution offers MSOs a modular "pay as you grow" strategy," said Gregory Hutterer, director of cable product marketing at TollBridge Technologies. One TB200 can be installed in a central office or point of presence to serve an entire metropolitan area. Packet Cable based MTAs are installed as required at the customer premises, and additional TB200s can be deployed as demand warrants in the central office. The initial cost for a TB200 is between $100,000 and $150,000, which is a small investment compared to the millions of dollars a MSO would have to initially spend to deploy circuit switched HDTs in all the head ends in a metropolitan area.
