LSI LOGIC DELIVERS NEW 800 MIPS SUPERSCALAR DSP ARCHITECTURE ZSPTM architecture available as intellectual property or as a standard product Milpitas, CA, September 27, 1999 - LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today introduced the ZSP, a high-performance open digital signal processing (DSP) architecture, expanding the company's existing DSP portfolio beyond OakDSPCore* processor and ARM9E microprocessor. LSI Logic's ZSP technology achieves high processing performance and excellent code density by utilizing a RISC-based, four-way superscalar, 800 MIPS, dual-multiply accumulate (MAC) architecture, optimized for voice-over-network (VoN) and wireless applications. LSI Logic's ZSP technology is the only open DSP architecture available in silicon today capable of sustained throughput of 400,000,000 MAC operations per second at a clock speed of 200 MHz in 0.25 micron process. The ZSP architecture provides 3 times the signal processing performance of traditional DSPs, is scalable to suit a range of applications, and is substantially easier to program -- leading to shorter development cycles and reduced software development risk for LSI Logic customers. The ZSP architecture has a hardware controlled pipeline that relieves programmers of the complexities of the underlying processing engine while enabling software compatibility to be retained across different implementations. This allows C-compilers and assembly-level programmers to easily exploit the processing power that is available. Ease of programming is a key differentiator of the ZSP technology. In addition, LSI Logic is offering to license the ZSP architecture. "By offering the ZSP as an openly-licensed architecture, LSI Logic and our licensees will provide our customers a much-needed alternative to proprietary DSP architectures, enabling them to get to market faster with lower-cost highly-integrated solutions." said Giuseppe Staffaroni, vice president and general manager of LSI Logic's Communications Products Group. "In addition to the open architecture, our ZSP-based standard product is already proven in silicon and designed in successfully by customers such as TollBridge Technologies in its Voice over Digital Subscriber Line products." LSI Logic's initial standard product based on the ZSP architecture, the LSI401Z, is used by TollBridge Technologies, the leading developer of IP-based multiline voice solutions. The LSI401Z is designed in TollBridge's Voice over Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) products to provide a variety of audio CODEC implementations, echo cancellation, adaptive jitter buffering as well as embedded hardware control. TollBridge's TB50 Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) and the TB200 Local Exchange Gateway use LSI401Z processors at the heart of their programmable architecture. These products are the first IP-based systems to enable Competitive Line Exchange Carriers (CLECs) to provide quality voice over any broadband including all forms of DSL. "We needed a programmable DSP with the processing power to meet the needs of our DSL products that we could go to market with today," said James Grady, vice president of marketing, TollBridge Technologies. "LSI Logic's ZSP product is high performance, extremely flexible and easily configurable, and gives us a strong migration path for future services." LSI Logic's roadmap for its ZSP architecture includes additional application specific standard products (ASSPs) as well as DSP processor cores that can be seamlessly integrated into its system-on-a-chip CoreWare library. Evaluation systems are available today and come with a full tool chain, including an efficient C-compiler. The LSI401Z chip is available as a standard product, and is priced at $65 in 1,000 quantities.
