TB200 Voice Gateway

TB200 Datasheet (PDF)

The TB200 is a line-side voice over IP gateway that allows any broadband access service provider to offer a toll-quality voice service. Unlike simplistic voice over the Internet adapters, the TB200 is aimed at public carriers offering toll-quality service to business or residential subscribers. To the subscriber, the quality and reliability of the voice service is at least equal to or better than traditional POTS or CENTREX.

Within the TollBridge platform family, the TB200 is aimed at local exchange carriers (incumbents or competitors) offering voice over DSL, T1 or any other broadband access transport medium carrying IP traffic. Since telco-provided voice over broadband is often marketed toward business customers, the TB200 uses standards-based trunking protocols such as BLES (DSL Forum) or LES (ATM Forum) to gain performance efficiencies. The voice service can co-exist with the data service on the same line, offering the provider the benefits of convergence in the access network.

The TB200 is the most widely deployed access gateway in service today with over 40,000 paying subscribers in service. Actual measured reliability for gateways in service is over 99.999% with well over 99.99% call completion. The TB200 is NEBS certified, has fully redundant hardware and software elements with no single point of failure and includes safety and environmental certifications from a variety of international agencies including UL, CE mark and others.

The TB200 achieves its performance through a robust modular architecture. The shelf itself is a 21-slot telco rack-mounted system, with a high-performance mid-plane containing both packet-switched and TDM channels. Available modules include "voice" modules that perform encoding, decoding and call control, "switch" modules that route packets and cells to the proper destination within the system and "interface" modules that connect to the WAN and switching systems. "Administration" modules are also used to perform provisioning, housekeeping and various management functions. All modules have an optional redundant twin and are hot-swappable.

Malmo luxury hotelsFunctionally, the TB200 interworks voice over IP (VoIP) packets in the access network to Class 5 switches or softswitches in the PSTN. The TB200 aggregates IP or ATM traffic from multiple serving areas to maximize equipment utilization and to minimize costs. It employs a powerful, DSP-based architecture with superior echo cancellation and jitter buffer implementations to deliver toll-quality voice service. Dialtone, billing, and all of the value-added custom calling features available from the Class 5 switch today are transparently delivered by the TollBridge platform.

Basic Application Description

Circuit-switched voice traffic coming from the Class 5 switch is packetized and sent to an Integrated Access Device (IAD) located at the customer premises. The TB200 appears as a digital loop carrier (DLC) to the Class 5 switch and transparently delivers all Class 5 services to end users. Going the other way, the IAD translates samples from multiple voice-lines into packets that are sent through the broadband network. The TB200 Voice Gateway translates the packetized voice data back into circuit switched voice traffic for delivery to the Class 5 switch using a GR-303 or V5.2 interface. The TollBridge architecture delivers toll-quality multiline voice that is indistinguishable from circuit-switched voice. The TB200 Gateway, together with the TollView Management Suite, and TollBridge TB50/TB55 and partner customer premise equipment, provide a complete IP Voice over broadband solution for carriers and their residential and small to midsize business customers.

Features

  • Converges both data and voice into a common packet-switched access service enabling carriers to offer the widest range of revenue-producing services over minimal facilities
  • Works with any broadband access technology (cable, all DSL types, wireless or E1/T1) or Class 5 switch (Lucent, Nortel, etc.) for maximum flexibility
  • Leverages existing voice switches for increased reach and performance: an entire metropolitan area may be served from a single Class 5 switch
  • Modular platform with high-speed midplane and complete fault-tolerance for scaleability and reliability
  • Support for all network services and Class features including Centrex, call waiting, voicemail, E-911, 411, etc.
  • Toll quality voice: phone service better or equal to POTS
